YBA is a Toronto hip hop artist that brings a little Latin touch to his music.

Spice in the 6ix aims to showcase creatives from the GTA whose talent we think gets over looked or does not get enough shine as they should. This week’s creator, YBA, has been selected as one of our Top 6 Hidden Spices. This is an opportunity for our audience to become better acquainted with him through our brief Q&A interview.

1. What’s your background and which part of Toronto did you grow up?

“I’m from North York and I’m of Ecuadorian descent. I grew up moving around the GTA frequently with my parents, who attempted to provide the best possible life for me.”

2. What does YBA mean and Who inspired you to start rapping?

“YBA originated from back in the day, always being around the Jamaican culture and slang. So yungboiii was originally what I was nicknamed, then it became apparent that if I added the first letter of  my name it would flow nice. There became the beginning of YBA, as i grew up, picked myself up got myself together and no longer a Yung boy so it was time the title for YBA to change and now stand for Yung BOSS Antonio.”

“In terms of who inspired me to start rapping, there isn't any one that I can say in specific because im true to myself and believe i dont need to fabricate anything or learn off another individual because my music is all original and authentic no gimmics not like anyone els trying to put a fake image for the public.. but if I would choose some roll model material rappers that i had looked up too growing up I would have to say the old school rap game was much more influential in terms of music lyrically and life. So I gotta say Tupac Shakur, Biggie Smalls and Eminem are the main 3 who in my eyes carry poetic characteristics in their music and have stories people can relate to.”

3. What would you say you’re bringing to the Toronto hip hop scene that’s different from the other artists?

“Aiming to bring new life into the genre of drill not choosing the regular violent and negative approach many current day artists do. Incorporating the Latin roots with a Latin-inspired string melody and explodes into a bouncy drill record. I flow effortlessly with loads of energy over the drill/uk type instrumentals while still showing off my vocal skills.”

4. Where would you like to see your career in the next 5 years

“In the next 5 years I hope me and my mgmt team get far in the aspect of the music industry and to achieve features with many great inspirational artists in our current day for example like dj Khalid, Drake, central cee, rush millions. I definitely see myself taking the music very far with the passion I have for not letting myself give up, I don't see my determination and work ethic for music stopping.”

5. Where can fans go to connect with you and check out your music?

“You Can find me on all music platforms from Apple to Google music, spotify, if you would like to reach out I mainly respond through Instagram but I also have facebook twitter and tik tok @ybafrmdajane

IG @ ybafrmdajane and @ybafrmdajane on all music platforms.”

“if you wanna speak through dms . As for any music for business inquires you can reach my mgmt team on Instagram via

@Team_realestate247 and @special_kpromo”

6. Is there any new spice that you’re working on  right now that you’ll like to share exclusively on Spice in the 6ix Media?

“We got some big opportunitys comming up in the New Years. For example YBA will be performing and opening up for Tony Yayo Canadian tour on Feb 5th and new upcoming possible ep including more inspirational lyrics.”
